Fly Fishing

The world class fly-fishing in the Roaring Fork Valley is no secret. The valley offers three gold medal rivers and a nearly unlimited supply of high mountain lakes and streams that provide numerous opportunities to catch trout. You will find rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout in nearly every body of water here in the Roaring Fork Valley. Fishing, however, is not always about catching fish. Trout live in beautiful places and sometimes it is just as rewarding to find yourself in these beautiful places as it is to catch fish.

Roaring Fork River

The Roaring Fork River is a freestone river that starts high up on Independence Pass and runs 70 miles through the Roaring Fork Valley until it meets up with the mighty Colorado River in Glenwood Springs. The “Fork” offers up a wide range of fishing experiences with easy wade fishing access on the upper river to the excellent float fishing on the lower stretches. The “Fork” is a local favorite that doesn’t have quite the reputation as the Frying Pan, but that typically means less pressure from other anglers.

Frying Pan River

The Frying Pan River offers up 14 miles of gold medal trout water below the Reudi Reservoir. The infamous “Toilet Bowl” holds monster fish (10+pounds) gorging themselves on the freshwater Mysis Shrimp pouring out of the dam below the reservoir. Due to the consistent year-round water flows and temperature of this tail water river, anglers on the Frying Pan experience abundant insect hatches. These prolific hatches make the “Pan” a dry fly-fishing mecca.

Colorado River

The “Mighty” Colorado River as it flows past the Roaring Fork Valley offers up big water best accessed by a float trip with various sections available to explore with one of the valley’s experienced fly-fishing guides. From strong rainbows and large brown trout to the occasional Colorado River Cutthroat Trout. Typically, big water equates to big fish!
