Winter: Snowmass  Ski Season

Of course, skiing is a major draw for visiting Snowmass in the winter. Snowmass Mountain is one of the most popular skiing resorts in the United States (and the world, for that matter), and for good reason!

Ski season typically runs from November to mid-April, which means wintertime is the peak time to get out on the slopes. Beyond skiing, you can enjoy other winter activities like snowshoeing, snow tubing, and snowcat rides.

One of the most popular Snowmass events, Ullr Nights, occurs in the wintertime. Get to know fellow vacationers, do some snow tubing, and drink hot cocoa at this iconic celebration!

Weather-wise, be prepared for the cold in winter in Snowmass. Typical temperatures are snowy, with highs in the 20s and 30s and lows dipping into the single digits and even into negative territory. Be sure to bundle up!

Spring in Snowmass

best time to visit snowmass spring

Spring in Snowmass is a bit of a hidden gem. While it can be a quieter time in the village, it’s a great option if you’re looking for less crowds and want to take advantage of the end of ski season!

Early spring overlaps with the tail end of ski season, which typically runs into mid-April. This is when you can often find softer snow, sunny days, and fewer lift lines.

As the snow begins to melt later in the season, Snowmass transitions into a peaceful off-season. Some restaurants and activities may have limited hours, but that also means it’s one of the best times to enjoy the area without so many people around!

Weather in the spring can be a mix, so it’s a good idea to pack for both cool mornings and warmer afternoons. If you don’t mind a little unpredictability, spring can be a great time to visit for a more low-key, budget-friendly escape. Plus, it’s a great time to go hiking!

These are some of our favorite Snowmass Hiking Trails:

Rim Trail

Distance: ~7 miles (one way, can do shorter sections)

Tom Blake Trail

Ditch Trail

Summer in Snowmass

Speaking of hiking, summer is a wonderful time to get out on the trails! The weather has warmed up nicely by this point in the year, and you won’t risk snow even at very high elevations. Even at summer peak, though, it never gets too hot in Snowmass. July is the hottest month, with average highs around 75-80 and lows in the mid 40s.

One of the highlights of summertime is the Snowmass Summer Concert Series. Held weekly on Fanny Hill, these free outdoor concerts are a favorite for both visitors and locals. Grab a blanket, pack a picnic, and settle in for live music with a mountain backdrop for the evening!

Visit Snowmass in Fall

If you’re hoping to catch some of the best fall colors in Colorado, Snowmass is hard to beat. The mountains come alive with golden aspens!

Peak fall colors typically hit in mid to late September, though timing can vary slightly depending on weather conditions. During this window, you’ll find entire hillsides glowing with yellow and gold. It’s really something to behold!

One of the best ways to take it all in is by getting out on the hiking/biking trails or taking a scenic drive. Hiking and biking paths like the Rim Trail or Government Trail give you up-close views of the changing leaves, while nearby drives offer gorgeous panoramic views of the valley.

Fall is also considered a quieter shoulder season in Snowmass, so you can enjoy the foliage without the summer crowds. The village tends to be more relaxed this time of year too, if you’re looking for a quieter fall getaway.

Weather in the fall is generally cool and crisp, with highs ranging from the 60s°F in early September to the 40s°F by late October, and nights consistently dropping into the 20s or 30s°F. It’s a good idea to pack layers so you’re ready for swings in temperature as you explore!

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best time to visit Snowmass if I want fewer crowds but still plenty to do?

Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots if you want breathing room. You’ll get a quieter village vibe while still having good access to trails, views, and dining—without peak-season congestion.

Which airport should I fly into for Snowmass?

The closest commercial airport is Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE), and it’s the easiest transfer to Snowmass. Denver (DEN) and Eagle (EGE) are common backups if flights into Aspen don’t work, but you’ll be budgeting for a longer drive or shuttle.

Do I need a rental car once I’m in Snowmass?

Not necessarily. Snowmass is set up for car-free navigation in-season, and you can use local/regional transit to move around the village and connect to nearby areas without driving.
